Blog # 12

One weakness that I have is my conclusions in my essay. I feel pretty confident throughout the essay except for my conclusions. I feel like i have improved throughout this semester, and hope to improve more on my endings so i can be 100 % confident on my whole essay.

blog post #12

I feel pretty confident in my writing so far in this class. I learned things i didn't know before such as the MLA format. That is probably the greaest weakness in this stage of writing. I just don't know exactly how to write an essay in that format without going back to the book and looking it up, because i really didn't learn about it in highschool.I've definately feel that i have improved with my writing skills since the beginning of this class.

Post Blog # 12- Essay's Greatest Weakness at this stage in my writing

Weakness occurs sometimes when I tend to write an essay, but that is normal. When doing essays, I always check for grammar, syntax, spelling, and organization. If I find an error, I fit it; howver, sometimes I may be wrong and instead, the computer was right. Essays for me is very common. I have done much better in doing them throughout high school, and in to college. What I fell is my essay's greatest weakness at the stage in my writing are trying to give specific examples that relates to the topic and/or subject. Ialso tend to have a problem in supporting the fact, and coming up with a valid or good reason. If I come up with a fact or idea, I sometimes forget to support it, using enough details. But however, my grammar, what I also feel is still my greatest weakness at this stage in my writing. I, back then, was having a difficult time writing essays that shows good grammar. When I receive my essays back, sometimes I get comments saying things about my grammar, such as proof read and edit or revise or make a clear sentence, etc. I sometimes read it out loud to myself and realized that it does not make sense or no one comprehend it. For the time being, I still feel it is one of my weakness; but however, it did improve when I enter college. The two main weaknesses I feel I have at this stage are grammar, and supporting details/using examples to discuss the topic.

The Simpson's

The Simpson's website that I viewed had a normal town and little icons to click on to view the episodes, characters, and behind the scenes etc. It looked like a normal website showing a normal town. When I clicked on one of the icons it showed a 2 attractive women standing in line to become a character on the Simpson's, and then leading to a door with a man behind it with kiss marks all over his face. These things can be the moral agenda and Hyper-irony.

The Simpsons blog #11

When I looked at the web site for The Simpsons, it showed a regular town, very much like a real town with it's bank, grocery store, fast food place, etc. But all of them have a double meaning and many of them reflects what is going on in today's society, you just have to look close to realize it, it's a funny way to tell history.

#11 Hyper-ironic

The hyper-ironic style that Mathenson attributes to the show is linked to the website www.thesimpsons.com by gender game altogether because when the site comes up its just a normal town, nothing wrong with it. Then you click on "Zombie Shoot-out" and its a game about killing zombies. So that ties into no justiciable moral adgenda.

Post Blog #11- "The Simpsons- Hyper Irony"

Matheson's article is similar to, when viewing www.thesimpsons.com, in that when gonig on the webiste, it show different many things that a person could click on. When clicking on the characters, you see them in a line, and actually laughing and/or moving. Carl Matheson mentions that "Having missed the references, these people may interpret The Simpsons as nothing than a slightly offbase family comedy populated with characters who are neither very bright nor very interesting" (SOL 253). The webiste also attributes that there are many different ideas, things that are stil going on today, and was in the past. People pick which episode they can read, and find out what it was about.
If I had to explain any differences, I could explain it by saying that the website shows The Simpsons shop store, in which anyone could buy, such as games, a pen, etc. Also, the website shows that fashion is not important; family and education are very significant. It does not consist of an single episode, and "Over two hundred episodes spread out over more than ten seasons" (SOL 259). I also observed that Homer is sleeping and drewling on the desk. The Simpsons is a serious funny comedy that everyone laugh while watching. On the website, the characters are somewhat funny, and are more focusing on work. It shows somewhat entertainment, but on T.V., it shows more comedy enterainment.

The SimpSons BLog PosT # 11

The Simpsons by Carl Matheson is a comedy in which he concentrates on in deep transformation. Carl focuses on Quotation which many of today's comedies essentially depned on the device for referring to or quoting other works of popular culture. He also focuses on hyper-ironic which is the flavor of humor offered by todays comedies, based on a shared sense of humanity. The website dislpays a lot of hyper-ironic style that Matheson contributes to the show. When you click on the characters, they all have funny message boards. There's also a man hiding in the closet with kiss marks all over his face, who puts a sign "do not disturb" on the door. Each and every page displays it's own sense of hyper-ironic, and it makes the site just so much more interesting. Many of today's viewers of the comedy won't fully understand much of what goes on in The Simpsons due to an unfamiliarity with the popular culture that forms the basis for the show's references. The simpsons is nothing more than a slightly off-base family comedy populated with characters who are neither very bright nor very interesting in some opinions.

blog #10 The Sopranos

If Tony Soprano was a real person, it would be a regular person that has a deep and twisted killer mind. The way his character is portray, it show the very bad side of people. I think morally The Sopranos are dangereous, but to make a Tv show about it, it makes such a good drama that people can't stop watching it. In the show only the viewers know how bad he is, and is great to be part of the suspence.

Sopranos

I feel like the sopranos can and can not be morally dangerous. I think is totally fine watching this show, but I would never be impacted by the show so much by letting it change my mind and actions on life. Only the weak minded and hearted can be impacted and changed in such a way.

Blog post #10

I believe the Sopranos are definately morally dangerous. Mob men are vicious and dangerous criminals. These "gangsta's" go around threatening and killing people for a living. They just think it's ok! I think it's ok for adults to watch the Sopranos. I wouldn't reccommend anyone under 18 watch it, because it can give them bad ideas. I used to watch the last season of the Soprano's every Sunday. It's not exactly my type of television but my boyfriend loves it so i watched it. James Harold states " I certainly don't think I would have liked him if he were a real person, and lived down the block." I don't think anyone would want to live anywhere near Tony Soprano if he were real. You would be scared for your life everyday, he may just be plotting to kill you next! Many people feel a mixture of fear , fascination, and disgust. Everyone has their own opinion.

The Sopranos

The Sopranos is a show that can be considered morally dangerous but it all the depends on the person that is watching the show because it does show you things that people shouldn't do. but that doesn't mean that a person that is going to watch The Sopranos is going to do the exact something, it all depends if you know what's right and wrong.

Reality show

I chose the reality show "The Real World" on M.T.V. I agree with what the article says about these televsion programs and commericals. As the Real World ended, all of the MTV television commericals began. Mostly teen commercials were displayed , which targets the teen viewers that watch MTV. When do you even see an elder watching MTV? All of the actors and actresses, and even Singers are all teenagers or young adults. MTV views newer music for the newer generation of teens. This is why they would show a phone advertisement with Christina Aguilera , a laptop advertisement, and even a proactive commercial with Jessica Simpson. These commericals target college teens and also teens who are influenced and attracted to the product more with one of the most popular recrding artists in America.

" Post #9"--"A Moral Never-Never Land: Identifying with Tony Soprano."

The Sporanos is morally dangeorus. The passage suggests that they are criminals, and kill people. One passage that supports this is "He breaks their legs and threatens to castrate them." Therefore, I believe watching The Sporanos is a bad idea.

Is The Sopranos morally dangerous? #10

I feel that The Sopranos TV series is more of a mature program. So if you are watching it you know right from wrong. you know that killing people is wrong, and stealing stuff is wrong. The book says that it isn't morally dangerous because everything evens itself out. There are good people, Dr. Melfi, there are people who are bad but do the time, Adriana, and then there is Tony Soprano. So all the characters even the show out.

Reality Show Blog #8

One reality TV show that I watch when I have the time is CSI. This show presents how investigators solve crimes. This show creates a fictional view and a realistic view of how forensic science works. In the signs of life it says that these crimes scene shows have something to do wiht 9/11... and I dont feel that is true becuase they were on before 9/11. Maybe they have made them more relistic to show what really happens but I dont feel it has anything to do wiht 9/11.

Blog #8- Viewing an "reality" show

When viewing a reality show, it discusses what is going on in the real world. When I read the passage, "Video Dreams," it does show the similarilty of what the reality show discusses. The "reality" show that I viewed was "The Amazing Race." Basically it is about a team of two people who race around the world in order to win the one million cash. They do many things, such as detour, road block, and meet new people. For the detour, they either have a choice between two things, and the team have to pick one. The road block is when one member of the team have to perform the task. They follow each other, sometimes ask for help, and experience wonderful things on their journey. The book mentions that "reality" tv get polls, meaning that people are allow to rate how on good the show is, and it appears to on t.v. It also show culture, in which it affect the viewers to view the "reality" show. As the book mentions, "A game show element with an action adventure theme that invites viewers to imagine themselves in exciting outdoor situations that are exaggerated versions of the sort of adventure-safari vactions that had become very popular in the 1990s," the "Amazing Race" does relate to htis.

REALITY SHOW POST # 8

Reality TV is a genre that seems to be on the verge of taking over every other kind of televsion show. One reality television show i watch occationally is CSI. It basically a crime drama that shares story lines centered on muder mysterys, and investigators who solve it. These programs combine a fictional story line with realistic views into the world of a forensic scientist. It states in Signs of Life, "A second source for the interest in reality-oriented crime dramas can probably be found in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks." I agree with this statement also. Americans became aware of the people who are responsible for maintaining national security. Television crime shows show their audience basically that ordinary people like them are working to keep track of the bad guys, and it really makes us feel more secure.

"Sex,Lies and Advertising" By: Gloria Steinem

" Their dominant themes were anger and relief: relief because those vast uncritical oceans of food/fashion/beauty articles in other women's magazines were not what women wanted after all, and also relief because Ms. wasn't going to take ads anymore, even those thatwere accompanied by fewer editorial demands and : anger because consumer infromation, diverse articles, essays, fiction, and poetry could have used the space instead of all those oceans of articles about ad categories that had taken up the most of women's magazines for years..."

The passage I have chosen from this essay is important because it shows the response to changes made in Ms. magazine. The female readers of Ms. were happy that advertisements and articles about how to apply your make-up were removed from the magazine. apparently many of the women felt that the magazine's new contents were much more gratifying and enjoyable. It shows that Gloria Steinmen had been correct when she surmised that her readers do prefer poem's to cigarette ads and diverse articles instead of articles on what color is popular this season.

Sex, Lies, and Advertising

In the article by Gloria Steinem “Sex, Lies, and Advertising“, she talks a lot about the advertising industry. She asked people and watched people and found out that people really do are about what they are reading. People don’t understand how much advertising has an effect on us the consumers. I chose the sentence that explains how Gloria found out about how much advertising effects us. “After almost four years of listening to responses and watching the ripples spread out from this pebble cast upon the waters, I can tell you that, yes readers do care; and no, most of them were not aware of advertisers control over the words and images around it.” (Steinem 184)

Sex, Lies, and Advertising

Gloria Steinem has a really good outlook on ad's in magazines. She feels that ads take over most of the magazines that are published. This has even been occurring for many years. She uses the magazine Ms. as an example in her reading. I picked this paragraph to represent an important idea of how theirs more ad's then articles, essays, fiction, and poetry that should be in the magazine rather then all these advertisements. It also explains how the readers were angry and relieved at what the magazine was producing and showing their customers on what they should be reading. "Their dominant themes were anger and relief: relief because those vast uncritical oceans of food/fashion/beauty articles in other woman's magazines weren't necessarily what women wanted after all, and also relief because Ms. wasn't going to take ads anymore, even those that were accompanied by fewer editorial demands, anger because consumer information, diverse articles, essays, fiction, and poetry could have used the space instead of all these oceans of articles about ad categories that had taken up most of women's magazines for years.(SOL. Gloria Steinem. Sex, Lies, And advertising.185.)

Sex, Lies, and Advertising

"I could imagine the whole chain of women-Lauren Hutton, preferring to be in the africa that is her passion; the ad executive who signed the letter, only doing her job; the millions of women readers who would see the resulting artificial images; all of us missing sources of information, insight, creativity, humor, anger, investigation, poetry, confession, outrage, learning, and perhaps most important, a sense of connection to each other; and a gloriously diverse world being flattened by a velvet steamroller."(Steinem pg. 202) This paragraph basically tells everything about gloria's views on the editorial scams these writers do for magazines and the next generation needs to be honest and actually do somthing about this because men and women all over want this to stop.

Sex Lies and Advertising

The article "Sex Lies and Advertising" by Gloria Steinmen talks about the publishing industry. Basically advertisers are lying to the people, by transforming the image of things. Gloria decided to write an article in hopes to change the system. She wants the next generation running clean honest media. Gloria focuses mostly on womens magazines. She recieved responses from numerous groups of people for example writers, editors, executives, teachers of journalism, communications, and advertising. I chose the paragraph "Other penalties are increasing. As older readers will remember, women's magazines used to be a place where new young poets and short story writers could be published. Now, that's very rare. It isn't that advertisers of women's products dislike poetry or fiction, it's just that they pay to be adjacent to articles and features more directly compatible with their products." I think she makes a good point, and that our media is mostly lies to get our attention. I would rather see the next generation publish some honest real information for the media. Somehow i feel it will be very difficult, because it's already out there, and people are used to reading all the garbage.

Men's men and women's women.

I chose Men's Mens and women's women. The passage i have selected I feel summarizes the important idea of advetisers that push a product as far as showing the customer their fantasies in the advertisement of a product. '" This commercial potrays the womans's man. He's good looking, sensitive, romantic, and he appreciates her. What's more , they are alone in an exotic location where he procedes to seduce her."(SOL, " Mens Men and women's women. Steve Craig. 171.).

Blog #7- Gloria Steinem's "Sex, Lies, and Advertising"

Gloria Steinem's reading "Sex, Lies, and Advertising" is a long passage that talks about how Gloria describe different ways advertisers (advertsing) can lie to people, mentions the Ms. company, magazines for women, different industries/newpapers/ads, costs/perecentages, the way we "use" products (things), and our sexuality/looks/sex. This passage as she mentioned was mostly for women, how they feel about the products they buy, and/or about advertising.
The passage/section I chose to pick that summarizes/states an important idea is "Cheered on by early support from Volkswagen and one or two other car companies, we finally scrape together time and money to put on a major reception in Detroit. U.S. carmakers firmly believe that women choose the upholstery color, not the car, but we are armed with statistics and reader mail to prove the contrary: A car is an important purchase for women, one that is such a symbol of mobility and freedom that many women will spend a greater percentage of income for a car than will counterpart men."
The authors means that everyone need some automoblie or transportation to go around places/travel. I semi-agree with that passage that women chooses which color she wants the equipment furniture to be, not the car itself, and how, in Detroit, they put together time and money as important factors. A car is a symbol of transportation/movement including freedom, where poeple can travel anywhere they want to go, get out of the house, and enjoy life. She says that "Many women will enjoy a greater percentage of income for a car than will counterpart (similar, equal, matching part, equivalent) men" (Gloria steinem PG 189). Women will pay more, pay more money as a result of using the car a lot of times, and use the car more. Volkswagen is wonderful automobile that many people have as an transporation. Women love going out, to enjoy life, and drive.
I felt this section did summarized or stated an important idea. Also, this passage summarizes what she was trying to say about automobiles being important in life and how it is a symbol of mobility and freedom.

Prime time is when to advertise for men and sometimes women

Steve Craigs passage of "Men's Men and Women's Women" describes how advertisment ads and commercials attempt to lure the audience at a specific time of day. The evening hours of Prime Time is considered a good time to reach men and women who work away from home, but since large numbers of men are also in the audience, it could also be a good time to advertise products with wider target audiences. (Craig pg.162) As stated in the passage, men outnumber women for audience throughtout sport seasons such as football season, or basebakk season, therefore making it better to advertise products targeting men.
