I choose Steve Craig's "Men's Men and Women's Women". I found that the sentence that describes the rest of the passage is located in the first paragraph second sentence. It reads "Large advertisers and their agencies have evolved the pseudo-scientific method of time purchasing based on demographics, with the age and sex of the consumer generally considered to be the most important predictors of purchasing behavior". In this sentence, the author explains how advertisements are always target to a certain public and he explains it by describing four different tv commersials. He explains howthese ads are shape to appeal female and or male consumers.

Steve Craig / Men's Men and Women's Women.

The passage that I took was from Steve Craig named, Men's Men and Women's Women. While I was reading it I noticed that all of the television advertiser's have to be well aware about the time that they have show their commercial to the audience and to whom they are showing it to. that is why I chose this passage "Prime time (the evening hours) is considered a good time to reach women who work away from home, but since large numbers of men are also in the audience, it can also be good time to advertise products with wider target audiences. Weekend sports periods(and, in season, "Monday Night Football") are the only time of the week when men outnumber women in the television audience, and therefore, become the optimum time for advertising products and services aimed at men" (162) I choose this one because it demonstrates who they have to now everything about how to put an ad on television, when and where. And it is because of that the products are more easily sold. Maybe.

Men's Men and Women's Women

The passage "Men's Men and Women's Women" by Steve Craig has many different views on the economic structure of the television industry, and how if affects us as the consumer. Advertisers concentrate their budgets on those programs which the target audience is most likely to view. For example during the daytime they target middle age to older women as the audience, because there most likely home with children. During the evening hours the target audience would mostly be men. Men usually watch television when they come home from work at night. Another example is on the weekends which men definately outnumber women in the audience, which services then.. aim at men. Steve takes the analysis for four commercials. He tells what level the spectators and fans are on, using feminization, masculinity, and all these different characteristics which target an audience. I chose this excerpt which I think basically sums the passage up. "Gendered commercials, like gendered programs, are designed to gave pleasure to the largest target audience, since it is the association of the product with a pleasurable expierence that forms the basis for much American television advertising. Yet patriarchy conditions males and females to seek their pleasure differently. Advertisers therefore portray different images to men and women in order to exploit the different deep-seated motivations and anxieties connected to gender identity".

The Parable Of Democracy Goods

When i was reading "The parable of democracy goods" by Roland Marchand, i found it to be very interesting. There was a paragraph i came across that i felt somewhat summarized an important idea. "But the cumulative effect of the constant reminders that "any woman can" and "every home can afford" was to publicize an image of American society in which concentrated wealth at the top of a hierarchy of social classes resticted no family's opportunity to acquire the most significant products". There basically saying here that everyone is on a different level, a different social class. Everyone has different income and can't afford the same things. Some people buy the expensive products, and others buy the store brand which is just plain cheaper. These class differences ended around the 1950's. This was because of equalities suggested by shared consumption patterns and our lifestyles.

Post Blog # 6

The reading I chose to do this time was Steven Craig's "Men's Men and Women's Women." The section I chose to pick was on page 163. "Gendered commercials, like gendered programs, are designed to give pleasure to the target audience, since it is the association of the product with a pleasurable experience that forms the basis for much American television advertsing. Yet patriarchy conditions males and females to seek their pleasure differently. Advertisers therefore portray different images to men and women in order to exploit the different deep-seated motivations and anxieties connected to gender identity." (page 163). The reason I chose this specific passage/section because it talks about commercials and how it effects men and women. Gendered programs are designed to attract the audiences and making them show pleasure/happiness. Images affect the way people think and how it appeal to them. I believe this passage does summarize/states an important idea. SOme advertisers show images that can harm or make a person feel nervous; make them feel that it is closely related to their identity. The authors states that "Variations in how men and women are portrayed are especially apparent when comparing weekend and daytime commercials, since ads durnig these day parts almost completely focus on a target audience of men or women respectively." (citation- page 163 last sentence in the last paragraph). I feellthat those types of commercials do change the way we feel and how we look. The thesis of this passage may be "Gendered commercials effect women and men identities in many ways, making them want to be attracted to those commercials; whereas advertisers show different images to both men and women that could possible effectour mental health (how we feel- nervous, have motivations, etc)."

Passage that states the important idea

The parable of the democracy of Goods always remained implicit in its negative counterpart. It assured readers that they could be as healthy, as charming, as free from social offense as the very "nicest" people, simply by using a product that anyone can afford. (Marchard pg.153) I belive this idea is key because its true in all aspects. People believe that all of a sudden if they use an advertised product that so many others used, and got results, it would be the same for themselves as well.

Sign's Of Advertising Blog 5

"Then open a copy of vogue. It is essentially a catalogue, where scarcely a page is without a ad. Indeed, advertisers themselves call this plethora of advertising "clutter" that they must creatively "cut through" each time they design a new ad campaign. The ubiquity of advertising in our lives points in a society in which people are constantly pushed to buy, as opposed to economies like Japan's that emphasize constant increases in production". (Signs of Life. James Twitchell. The signs of advertising. 147.) This idea of Mr. Twichell's is very interesting. He explains how we are forced to see and read these advertisements, just by flipping through a magazine. I think this is a really important key to the reading because he tells us how easy it i for advertisers to notice them and be attracted to their product.

In the passage "The Parable of the Democracy of Goods" by Roland Marchand, in my opinion the sentence that describes the entire essay is located in the second sentence in the 6 paragraph, "Only occasionally did such address those in the upper class who might think that thier status and 'fastidius' attention to personal care made them immune from common social offenses". The idea in the passage is that by convincing the middle-class consumers to buy a certain product, they would share the same experiences as the higher class, and therefore make the product sale more and be more succesfull.

"Since different products have different meanings to different audience segmentation studies are crucial. although agencies have their own systems for naming these groups and their lifestyles, the current supplier of much raw data about them is a not profit organization, the support Research Institute(SGI)"(Twithchell, James 204) I believe that this passage is important because it makes the reader understand that even though their are many companies trying explore what the people want to buy and they have to sell. Their is this organization that takes care of the meaning of the product it self and the way the people is going to use it.

Post #5- Identifying a passage that I felt states an important idea

The passage I felt that summarizes/states an imporant idea was from the reading "The Parable of the Democracy of Goods." The section I chose was: "Another variation of the parable of the Democracy of Goods employed historical comparisons to celebrate even the humblest of contemporary Americans as "kings in cottages." "No monarch in all history ever saw the day he could have half as much as you," proclaimed Paramount Pictures....The "American idea," epitomized by the Fisher Body Corportation, was destuned to carry the comforts and luxuries conducive to human happiness into "the life of even the humblest cottager." I didn't feel like typing the whole passage....(Its on page 154 into 155). The reason why I thought this passage summarizes/states an important idea is because Kings/Monarchs are important in history because they rule their own government, rule the society, economy, give people freedom. ...."The phrase "The King in Cottages" to compliment ordinary Americans on their freedom from "hardships" that even Kings had been forced to endure in the past" (SOL PG 154). A King/Monarch is a powerful ruler, and it give people a life in their society. It summarizes what movies shows Kings and majority of them are good, and it attracts people to view the movie. Movies, when it comes to history, shows a good summary of how life was with a King/Monarch back in the old days. That why I chose to pick this specific passage. I may be wrong..Ii tried my best.. It may not be good lol.....

Post Blog # 5- (# 6 for me)- Twitchell or Marchand

This blog is for summarizing which reading I picked. These two readings were good and gave accurate/true facts. One though had more information than the other one. The reading I chose to do was the one written by Roland Marchand, "The Parable of the Democracy of Goods." The reading as a whole is a little tough to understand. Basically Roland was mention how advertisements don't simply reflect American myths; instead they create them. It talks about how this young gentleman, Livingston Ludlow Biddle the third was being taking care of and how they were feeding him. Talks about how he enjoyed every minute since he been born and how the Cream of Wheat Corportaiton rapturously explained his constant care. Such others Roland mentioned were: (The) Deomocracy of Afflictions, and two posters of advertisement-- one showing a male in a suit and hat along with a female-- whereas the on the other picture, shows a slogan--"A King Can Have No More," presented by Paramount Pictures. He mentions copyrights, The Simmons Company, advertisers- their opinions on the advertisements, varieties of writings, and even broadcasting. He said something important about freedom.. "Freedom of choice came to be perceived as a freedom more significantly exercised in the marketplace than in the political arena" ( Last paragraph pg 159). Marchand goes on talking about democracy and how different "parables," pictures, advertisements, etc are affected. How advertisements create American myths.
the HGTV clip i chose to watch was the kitchen segment. The kitchen diden't reflect any perticular persons style, but insted accencted the sourdingd. in other words the kitchen was influenced by the the nature of the area. everything from the rustic stools to the blue stone tied in to the woods ant the mountians.

HGTV Blog

These two HGTV video clips were very interesting to me. It is wonderful of how nice and comfortable you could build and stylize your home. The bathroom was magnificent with its spa, and even the separated toilet! The best thing about the bathroom was the door to the hot tub. I think that is the perfect idea and spot for the hot tub to go. I loved the old look of the sink and the soothing relaxation of the candle chandelier above the spa. The kitchen was also very pretty and a good idea with the cherry wood cabinets and blue counter top. The hard wood floors are always the classy look for a cabin. It was nice to see how the kitchen was attached with the living room area, which is such a great advantage! I also loved the little bar to serve your guests drinks. Overall, this house was amazing with the location and inside as of what I seen.

HGTV Home Decor

That house is absolutly beauitful. Who wouldn't want a house like that? It's perfectly layed out with the kitchen being the focal point of everything. They are right most of the time that is where everyone hangs out. The blue backslash and countertops brought out the beauty of the cherry cabinets. They also picked a fantasic spot for this house. Out of every window i am sure that there is a beauitful view. The bathroom was also great. The only thing i didnt like was the fact that there was a door....that was kind of weird because the toilet was right there. I liked the fact of the shower and the bathtub sharing the same platform in a way. I also like how everyone had their personal space to do what they had to do. The fact that the closet was in the bathroom i thought was kind of weird too. I guess its because i have never seen that before. Over all it was a beauitful house.

HGTV video clip

As I was watching the video of the bathroom I noticed that the bathroom was very well distributed. everything had it's place and the materials that it had made the bathroom look comforting. Its a bathroom that most of the people would like that kind of bathroom in their house. the other video of the house was very interesting because it shows how a kitchen can be decorated with so many things that are very useful in that room. and how everything is distributed, the colors, textures and the view that it has so it can be pleasant to be in the kitchen.

the semiotics of home decor

the house was created perfectly to appeal to the american public.
the house was located a a great spot, there was a lot of open space, so it was great for a big family. the colors used, through out the house were very well selected to make the features of the house even more appealing. there were a lot of things in the house that match very well.
the bathroom was amazing, there was a lot of work put on in the entire bathroom, and the detail put on the tile was unbelivable. i think there was a lot of thinking before making this perfect house.

"The Semiotics of Home Decor"

Joan Kron's dream house of 2007 is amazing! The kitchen design is very unique. I loved the island in the middle, with the three colonial fixtures hanging down. The cherry wood floors matched the cabinets all the way around, and even the refrigerator. It looked great with the vibrant blue table tops. The best part was deffinately the open bar. It give such great entertainment when having friends over.
The bathroom of this 2007 dream house was even more amazing. I'm deffiantely having my bathroom put together like that when i buy a house. The marble tile from the ceiling to the floor gave it such a great touch. There was plenty of room, even with your own personal spa, door to outside patio, and lead to the master closet. It's just such a luxurious comfortable style with a lot of privacy. Who would'nt want that?

"The Semiotics of Home Decor"- Post # 5

The two websites deals with home decoration. Each of these websites consisted of values that reflected in each room. Each room were decorated nice, with appealing colors, smooth texture, very organized, clean, and each room consisted of many things that are popular in life. While I was watching the HGTV video clips, I was amazed how each room were fansty. They attract people, making them want to buy the items. The values are important, and I felt these two video clips were good. Found them interesting, but they can be expensive. There were many different things in each rooms, such as variety of vegetables, fruit, the stink, mircowave, and even the chairs/tables. One of hte websites showed a map of inside of the house of how it is set up in the beginning.
The kitchen was very pretty. It consisted of the micrwave, gas oven, chairs, tables, a stink, and flowers. It showed many values toward people, and many would want to pick this style out. Not many people hacve this type of kitchen at home. It sure reflects us and the overview of the house is like a dream house. This remind me of Home Edition: Extreme Make Over.
On the other hand, the bathroom was also vey valueable and pericous. It was nice, consisted of a nice mirror, shower door, curtains, and even candles. It makes me want to buy them as I am watching the videos. Also, nice lamps, along with a stink/faucet. This is what I called a "Dream House." I will never forget this HGTV video clips I ever saw in my life.

Walmats website induces's you by putting a list of catagories such as accessories, electronics, home, sports, and so on. These catagories help you narrow down what your looking for so that its easier to shop. Also they give a a "spotlite" which are the things that are products that they feel will catch peoples eye. What mostly makes you want to but a product from walmart is that fact that they have their "everyday low prices".

"eBAY",HOW DOES IT INDUCE U TO BUY?

Consuming a product is ultimately the last step in a marketing or production plan.It is intended to reach the consumer to impact their decision to consume. ebay have induced me to consume. Not only have their variety of low priced, brand named products but the opportunity I have to suggest the price I want to pay for an item. eBAY have afforded me shopping hassle free in the privacy of my home.At home, I can look at the item thoroughly then decide to buy.Added to that I can shop 24 hours a day ,with delivery on my door step within 24 hours.eBAY have induced me to consume because in comparison with other stores ,the prices and top quality matches the sameproducts on eBAY.With millions of other opinions from people who would have viewed a particular product, I feel comfortabe consuming ,unlike the department stores whose manager or a few workers might try to convince me to buy a particular product at the store.http://www.ebay.com

Dell's advertisement.

I chose the Dell website for this assignment. As soon as you click on the website it had all of the new technology of computers and accessory's. This website induces me to want the product by having and wanting the new and advanced computer's that were introduced. Not only did the web site's computer advertisements catch my eye, but also the new accessory's they had come out with. The website shows that as soon as you get on they advertise the new equipment that has recently come out. This makes me to believe that they waste no time to let you see what has come out for you to want and purchase by posting it on the main page.http://www.dell.com/

The Transworld Skateboarding website www.skateboarding.com induces the consumer by flashing all thier goddy products. When viewer's on this website are either lured into the skateboarding videos clips that are updated every day or some pictures of tricks they wish they could do. The articles are interesting and have attracting captions. When the website gets boring this site induces you by giving you other websites to go to for surfing, snowboarding, ect.

Walmart

http://www.walmart.com/

Walmart is a major store chain that spreads across the nation. The walmart website, lists all of the types of products it sells. For example the list a number of categories; like baby, books, music, jewlery, ect. They make you want to purchase their products by advertising their low prices. They also show pictures of the products, and describe them in detail. Mostly, the company use the idea of low prices for desirable products to induce the consumer to buy.

Induce you to consume

Many websites induce the consumer. I chose Macy's because it has a large variety of categories and products to choose from. These categories go from bed and bath, to jewelry, and beauty. Each item you click on shows a detailed summary about the product in an alluring way that makes the consumer want to buy. Sales and coupons you can use online is a plus because it catches the eye of a consumer. Anyone who see's a sale has to be the least bit interested to look at what is being offered. Many sites also provide free shipping with an order over a certain price. We feel, as the consumer, this is a great offer, because it is. Anything these companys can offer us, makes us interested. This is how Macy's "moves" the consumer through the website.

"The More Factor"

I agree with Laurence Shames 100 %. America relies on more and I believe this because I can use myself as an example. My goal in this lifetime is too make as much money as I possibly can by going to school and accomplishing my goal which is to be a very rich individual in this country. I will not let myself believe that only being a middle class person is enough, I want to become as high as I can possibly can get career wise and make the most money out of everyone around me. I look up to the people in Hollywood, and would love to get to their point. Most of America I think can agree with me and Shames, because nobody wants to really end up with no money, or just enough money. Everyone wants to be rich and happy. At this point of my life, I am really never happy with what I have, and always want more. That can be a big flaw that people have, but at the same time if you don't have that goal, then the world will move quickly by you.

www.cduniverse.com
This website sells music, movies, and games. It induces the customer to consume by making it easy to use. First it tries to catch your eye by listing new releases and current top sellers on the home page. It also has a centrally located search box and the different music genres listed on the side for easy access. Another feature that might induce you is that once you click on an item it will not only tell you about that featured product, but will list other items you may be interested in purchasing and has customer reviews open to the public.

" How does this site induce (persuade) you to consume (use it up)?"

When I think of a website that induce customers, I would think of wild by nature. When I went on the website, it was organized, appealing, and consist of interesting things. This website, www.wildbynature.com , gave specific and significiant details of what wild by nature is, and what it consist. Perhaps, many viewers find ths thing appealing because it shows variety of foods and people would like it. Many people like to eat healthy; include soy milk, organic foods, even for animals, rye bread, and even healthy burgers/warps/salads. That is how people "move" and making them want to buy thing there. When I enter the store, it is huge, very orgainzed, and appeared to consist of a nice atmosphere. The Signs of shopping

As I was reading The Signs of Shopping I realized that everything that I was reading is true. People go to the mall to have fun, they would shop or just take a look around and see what's knew. Hang out with family and friends. but know that is kind of changing because the Internet has facilitate us to go online and take a look around so we can buy from their. For some people this is more easier then just going to the mall and not waste their time walking around.

American Popular Culture Picture

When ask to pick a picture that shows American Popular Culture, it shows how it effect the world and how it is a trend in the society. For what I chosen, I believe that these show culture around the world.. They may be amny things that show popular culture, but for what I chose were: The Beatles, Beach Boys, and Carrie Underwood. Here, enclosed, are the websites for each picture: http://marcmercurio.com/My%20Webs/beatles%20b&w%202.jpg, http://www.oldie95.de/frameset/images/container/1114174115Beach%20Boys.jpg, and http://www.femalefirst.co.uk/images/carrie-underwood.jpg. For all these websites, I believe Rock from The Beatles and Beach Boys had grown double over the past 30 yrs... and for Carrie Underwood, the 5th Finalist on "American Idol," country's is getting better... Ever since she was in American Idol, country been popular, but however, I feel that it had grown more, and her cds became number one for weeks. Her cd was great and I own one of them. She won the Best Female Vocalist of the Year ( from the Golden Globes I think).

"The More Factor"

While I was reading the section that discuss "The More Factor," I was thinking of the same things he had thought. The speculator had many ideas, fighting until what they can do, and felt that America would keep on booming. He believes that America was the place where one would never quite come to the end.. He also believe that people shoudl deserved a second chance.... Shames mention the frontie, which was the raw material for the streak of economic booms. It summarizes of what we do as an American way and how much America is worth by doing those things. Shames believe that we try harder and never give up; always adopting more values. He mention something about growth and how it affects our economy. He goes on and on giving facts and examples... The main theme he wants us to understand is: American consciousness ( the way we use things and think of them). Most of his beliefs agree with me.

More factor

"The More Factor" written by Laurence Shames shows his beliefs in America progessing and achieving something better and richer every year. Shames shows that over the years people are starting to work harder and harder as the years go by. I agree with Shames bescuase of personal expierence and America is a place where people can start a better life. Lauarence's viewpoint is that possiblilties are always expanding and he is absolutley correct. Shames wants to progress.

THE SHAME FACTOR

In Shame's writing on the" more factor" ; he argues that the American culture focus has been on the ability to acquire quantity instead of quality while keeping to its tradition;frontier. In shame's argument he states that it is a practise which was unrealistically set. I do agree with his arguments put forward in the more factor, he showed how negatively "more" have impacted on the economy evident by the comparison on the reduction of productivity in his story. He also showed how the American culture has shown interest in sucess than decency and many has resorted to the tangible thought instead of the non tangible. The fact that they have narrowed their 'more' factor to lands and boundaries have also shown how the american culture lacked fore sight which would have ended ultimately in an untimely death.

"The More Factor"

I mostly agree with the passage "The more factor" by Laurence Shames. He portrays productivity growth decreasing over the years. The theory that we have more money than space is interesting. He shows how we measure progress by expansion of living, rather than in geographical expansion. Wanting more is an essential part of our history and character.
" The More Factor" is an article that tells somehow the truth about how people would come to America in order to settle down and start again. but this changed over the years because people had to work much harder and I think that, that situation is until today because of the types of government's.
