Post Blog # 5- (# 6 for me)- Twitchell or Marchand

This blog is for summarizing which reading I picked. These two readings were good and gave accurate/true facts. One though had more information than the other one. The reading I chose to do was the one written by Roland Marchand, "The Parable of the Democracy of Goods." The reading as a whole is a little tough to understand. Basically Roland was mention how advertisements don't simply reflect American myths; instead they create them. It talks about how this young gentleman, Livingston Ludlow Biddle the third was being taking care of and how they were feeding him. Talks about how he enjoyed every minute since he been born and how the Cream of Wheat Corportaiton rapturously explained his constant care. Such others Roland mentioned were: (The) Deomocracy of Afflictions, and two posters of advertisement-- one showing a male in a suit and hat along with a female-- whereas the on the other picture, shows a slogan--"A King Can Have No More," presented by Paramount Pictures. He mentions copyrights, The Simmons Company, advertisers- their opinions on the advertisements, varieties of writings, and even broadcasting. He said something important about freedom.. "Freedom of choice came to be perceived as a freedom more significantly exercised in the marketplace than in the political arena" ( Last paragraph pg 159). Marchand goes on talking about democracy and how different "parables," pictures, advertisements, etc are affected. How advertisements create American myths.
